The pups are REALLY making a mess now!  And, boy, are they rowdy!
They had their first set of shots this week, as well as having their second
worming.  They all checked out extremely well, and nothing could be
better....well, except for their elimination habits.  It's a never ending war to
keep them and their pen clean and smelling decent.  We felt we HAD to be
doing something wrong, so we asked some folks we know who breed dogs,
and they said we were knee deep into the messy stage.

It's like my dad, no, let's make it sound like Bret Maverick: It's like my old
pappy says: "Oh give me a home where the buffalo roam and I'll give you a
dirty house."  And Dad does tell me that!

But they're senses of humor and their attitudes couldn't be better.  They don't
even blink at thunderstorms, and they absolutely love people and dogs.  I'd
say they're well on their way to becoming great dogs.

Here's the latest shots of the pups, in birth order.  These pictures were taken
over two days.  We've been very busy here at the lodge, and getting a
decent pose is a slow process sometimes.
Puppy Pictures
The pups are weaned now and Lita is beginning to dry up.   They have been
completely separated from Lita for five days and are eating softened puppy
food like it's the best thing in the world.  The ONLY thing they like better is
shoe strings!  We turn them loose in the kitchen to eat now, and one of us is
aways in there with them to stop them from chewing cabinet corners.  This
morning, I tricked them and double tied my shoe strings.  It blew their minds
that they couldn't untie my shoes, hee, hee, hee...

Now, when I say they've been completely separated from Lita, it's only by the
ex-pen wire walls that keeps them apart.  For the first couple of days like
that, Lita would try to do the motherly thing and throw up her meals for them
just outside the walls.  But, see, Lita being the hog that I've discussed
earlier, as soon as she does it, she then realizes THERE'S FOOD ON THE
FLOOR, and she gobbles it down so fast, if the pups were able to get to it,
they would have to eat fast for them to get even a speck.

The pups, will be eight weeks tomorrow, 8/8/08!  We have them going
outside to use the potty, four times a day, which is, unfortunately, about two
times less than would be ideal.  But, four times has reduced the need for us
to don our hasmat uniforms to do cleanup.  Yeah, after they eat, we tell them
"let's go outside", and they scurry through the laundry room, out on the side
porch and down the stairs to the yard.  Once there, they go about their
business in a completely disorderly way.  It is absolutely hilarious watching
them running and playing in the grass!  We always leave them to play until
they're tired, and we take the opportunity to sit in the grass and let them
climb all over us.  They love the attention, and we are having a ball with
them.  Here are a few shots of them playing.
Snowball, now named Cara, has gone to her new home, and Onida, in her new
home in South Carolina, was the second to leave.  By the end of this coming
weekend, Sage will have gone to her new home.  I've got to say, we are so
proud of our little guys, how they've developed into such beautiful pups, with
such great personalities!

Tina took the pups out with Comet, our seven year old whippet, after lunch
today.  Tina said poor Comet didn't know what to do with all these wiggly things
jumping all over him.  Corky, our greyhound that we raised from a 9 week old
puppy, would do great with the pups, but she's WILD, and we're afraid she'd
end up running over one of them.  See, Corky does everything at ultra high
speed.

The pups were introduced to rain yesterday.  We've had several thunder storms
since they were born, but this was the first time it had set in and rained long
enough where we couldn't avoid taking them out in it.  Well, they decided they
didn't like rain, and refused to go about their business outside.  So it was back
into their indoor pen in our kitchen, where they, yes, went about their business
inside.  Man, that reminded us of what it was like after Lita was through with
them and before they learned how to run outside.  I know rain is good and all,
and that we need it badly, but I hope it can be scheduled in the middle of the
night, so as to not interfere with the pups' trips outside!

Here's the five we still have at the house in birth order.
Saw what I hope was good news today!  Gypsy's left ear is looking as though
it's beginning to stand up!  That's the way Sage's ears began standing up, so,
why not, you know?  Every night I get them together and tell them that I want to
see "ears up, kids!"
